Great and small

Last week I spoke of a holiday we took some years back to Italy. I mentioned the beauty of the Amalfi coastline and the awesome power of the volcanic Mt Vesuvius. I defy anyone who has stood on the rim of an active volcano and looked into bubbling cauldron below; anyone who has seen and smelt the acrid, sulphurous smoke issuing from it, to deny the existence of God.

Of course a holiday or a break from the routine is just that – a break from the daily grind, a chance to recharge the batteries so to speak. Meanwhile at home the plants in the garden took advantage of my absence to go wild.   

This morning, as then, I need to roll up my sleeves and get on with the task of tidying up the overgrown bushes and shrubs. After a few hours hard work it is time for a coffee break, a time to review what I have done. From where I am sitting I can see that several new plants that have blossomed recently. In front of me Rosa Mamma Mia, a 50th wedding anniversary present from my daughter and her partner has come into flower, whilst just behind it the butterflies are dancing on the buddleia plant sipping the nectar. And there tangled in the bushes this tiny, delicate, sweet scented jasmine struggling to make her presence known.

When I compare the perfect intricate design of the tiny flower with the awesome power of the mighty Mt Vesuvius and remember that each is the work of God, Creator of the Universe then I feel that like St Mary Magdalene when she returned to the Apostles on that first Easter Day, I can say “I have seen the Lord”.  (John 20:18)
